Mediterranean Gardens in Mallorca
A Mediterranean garden is the version of this island that needs the least argument with the climate. Tell us about the plot and we pass the brief to companies on Mallorca that design and plant in this style.

Structure first, flowers second
The look people recognise comes from evergreen structure rather than from colour. Olive, carob, cypress and holm oak give the shape; myrtle, rosemary, lavender, cistus and germander fill in beneath them; and the flowering happens in a burst between March and June rather than all summer.
That rhythm is the point. A garden built this way is at its fullest exactly when the island is pleasant to be outside in, and it is allowed to go quiet and silver through August instead of being forced to look like June with a hosepipe.
It also ages well. The planting thickens rather than needing replacing, and the gravel, stone and terracotta that go with it look better after a decade than on the day they were laid. The one climber almost everybody asks for is bougainvillea, which rewards being understood before it is planted: how to keep it flowering.
What this kind of planting usually involves
- Evergreen structure planting to carry the garden year round
- Species chosen for alkaline, free draining soil
- Gravel and stone mulch instead of bark
- Drip irrigation for establishment, then reduced
- Terracotta and stone as the material palette
- Shade from trees rather than from structures where possible
- Clipped forms kept loose rather than tight
- Seasonal cutting back rather than constant tidying

Mediterranean plants for Mallorca
Does a Mediterranean garden still need irrigation?
Yes, at least for the first two or three years while roots go down. After that many of these plants can be watered rarely or not at all, which is the whole reason for choosing them.
Will it look bare in winter?
It should not. The structure is evergreen, so the garden reads as full in January. What it loses is flower colour, not shape.
Can I mix in plants from home?
Some travel well and some do not. Anything that expects acid soil or summer rain will struggle here regardless of how it is watered, so it is worth asking the company quoting you which of your favourites are realistic.
