Drought Tolerant Gardens in Mallorca
Water on Mallorca is a seasonal argument that gets sharper every few years. A drought tolerant garden takes that argument out of the equation. Describe your plot and we pass it to companies that plant for low water use.

Low water starts with the soil
Most failures blamed on the plant list are really failures of ground preparation. A drought tolerant planting sits in free draining soil with a deep gravel mulch over it, so the surface dries while the root zone stays cool. Put the same plants into compacted clay with bark on top and they rot in the first wet autumn.
The second decision is grouping. Anything that still wants water goes together, near the house, on its own circuit, and the rest of the garden is planted so it can be left. That is what makes the water bill fall rather than the plant labels.
The third is patience. These gardens are watered properly for two summers so the roots go deep, and then weaned. A garden watered lightly forever never becomes drought tolerant at all.
What a low water garden usually involves
- Soil opened up and drainage corrected before planting
- Species that survive on winter rainfall once established
- Deep gravel or stone mulch across planted areas
- Hydrozoning, so thirsty planting sits on its own circuit
- Drip irrigation designed to be reduced over time
- Shade planting to cut evaporation at ground level
- Lawn replaced or reduced to a defined area
- A watering plan for the establishment years
How your request reaches a company

Does drought tolerant mean cactus and gravel?
No. It usually means Mediterranean shrubs, grasses and small trees, most of which flower. Succulents are one option among many rather than the definition.
How much water does a garden like this use?
Far less than a lawn and hedge garden of the same size, but the honest answer depends on the planting and the soil. Ask the company quoting you what its plan assumes per season.
Will it cope with the restrictions on my municipality?
That is the usual reason people build one. Restrictions vary by town hall and by year, so it is worth saying in your request which municipality you are in.
