Dry stone walls in Mallorca: what marges cost and why they last

Dry stone walls in Mallorca: what marges cost and why they last

Dry stone walling on Mallorca runs roughly €100 to €150 per linear metre for a garden wall, and around €3,700 to €5,300 as an element inside a larger project. A full terracing job on a medium garden costs €11,500 to €16,500. The technique uses no mortar at all, which is exactly why the walls have survived here for centuries.

Key takeaways

  • Garden dry stone walling costs about €100 to €150 per linear metre, more for tall retaining work.
  • A terracing and stonework job on a medium garden runs €11,500 to €16,500, and €19,500 to €28,100 on a large one.
  • No mortar means the wall drains and flexes, which is why marges outlive concrete on a moving slope.
  • The craft of the marger is recognised as heritage. It is skilled work and it is priced accordingly.

What is a marge?

A marge is a dry stone retaining wall that turns a slope into a level terrace. The Serra de Tramuntana is built out of them, thousands of kilometres of stone laid without mortar to make olive and almond growing possible on ground that would otherwise wash into the valley. The landscape they created is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, and dry stone walling itself is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.

In a garden the same technique does the same job at a smaller scale: it holds a bank, makes a usable level, and looks like it has been there longer than the house.

Why build without mortar?

Because a dry wall drains. Water passes through the joints instead of building up behind the wall, which is what pushes a mortared wall over in the first heavy autumn rain. A dry wall also moves. Ground here shifts with drought and downpour, and a structure that can settle a few millimetres without cracking outlasts one that cannot.

The trade-off is skill. There is nothing holding the stones together except how they were chosen and placed, so the wall is only as good as the person building it.

What does stonework cost?

WorkTypical cost
Garden dry stone walling, per linear metre€100 to €150
Masonry wall in local stone, taller retaining, per metre builtaround €350
Dry stone walling as an element in a larger project€3,700 to €5,300
Terraces and stonework, medium garden€11,500 to €16,500
Terraces and stonework, large garden€19,500 to €28,100

Height drives the price more than length does. A knee-high garden wall and a two-metre retaining structure are different jobs with different foundations, and the second one needs someone who understands what is above it. The cost guide puts these next to the rest of a garden budget.

Can an old wall be repaired instead of rebuilt?

Usually, and it is normally cheaper. A collapsed section is taken down to sound stone, sorted, and rebuilt using the material already on the ground. The stone is the expensive part, and an old marge comes with its own supply. What you are paying for is the labour and the eye.

A wall that is bulging rather than collapsed is worth looking at sooner. Bulges are what walls do before they fall, and rebuilding two metres now is a fraction of rebuilding twenty after a wet winter.

What should you ask a stonemason?

  • Whether they build dry or with a hidden mortar core, and why they recommend that here.
  • Where the stone is coming from, and whether it matches what is already on the plot.
  • How they handle drainage behind a retaining wall.
  • Whether the height needs any permission, which on a boundary or a terrace it sometimes does.

That last one is worth settling before work starts rather than after. We go through it in what needs permission in a Mallorca garden.

How the matching works

We do not build walls. We keep a list of vetted companies for terraces and dry stone on Mallorca and pass your job to the ones that cover your area and do this kind of work. Send photographs of the slope and they will quote you directly.

How much does a dry stone wall cost in Mallorca?

About €100 to €150 per linear metre for garden walling, and around €350 per metre for taller masonry retaining work. As part of a larger project, dry stone walling runs €3,700 to €5,300.

Why are Mallorcan walls built without mortar?

Because they drain and they flex. Water passes through the joints instead of building pressure behind the wall, and small ground movements do not crack the structure.

Can an old marge be repaired?

Usually. The collapsed section is taken down to sound stone and rebuilt with the material already there, which is why repair is normally cheaper than a new wall.

Do I need permission to build a wall?

Sometimes, depending on height, position and whether it retains ground. Rules are municipal, so check with your ajuntament before work starts.

Before the winter rain

A bulging wall is a repair. The same wall after a wet January is a rebuild. Send a photograph and a rough length and vetted Mallorca companies will price it directly.
