Dry stone walls in Mallorca: what marges cost and why they last

Dry stone walling on Mallorca runs roughly €100 to €150 per linear metre for a garden wall, and around €3,700 to €5,300 as an element inside a larger project. A full terracing job on a medium garden costs €11,500 to €16,500. The technique uses no mortar at all, which is exactly why the walls have survived here for centuries.

What is a marge?

A marge is a dry stone retaining wall that turns a slope into a level terrace. The Serra de Tramuntana is built out of them, thousands of kilometres of stone laid without mortar to make olive and almond growing possible on ground that would otherwise wash into the valley. The landscape they created is a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, and dry stone walling itself is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.

In a garden the same technique does the same job at a smaller scale: it holds a bank, makes a usable level, and looks like it has been there longer than the house.

Why build without mortar?

Because a dry wall drains. Water passes through the joints instead of building up behind the wall, which is what pushes a mortared wall over in the first heavy autumn rain. A dry wall also moves. Ground here shifts with drought and downpour, and a structure that can settle a few millimetres without cracking outlasts one that cannot.

The trade-off is skill. There is nothing holding the stones together except how they were chosen and placed, so the wall is only as good as the person building it.

What does stonework cost?

Height drives the price more than length does. A knee-high garden wall and a two-metre retaining structure are different jobs with different foundations, and the second one needs someone who understands what is above it. The cost guide puts these next to the rest of a garden budget.

Can an old wall be repaired instead of rebuilt?

Usually, and it is normally cheaper. A collapsed section is taken down to sound stone, sorted, and rebuilt using the material already on the ground. The stone is the expensive part, and an old marge comes with its own supply. What you are paying for is the labour and the eye.

A wall that is bulging rather than collapsed is worth looking at sooner. Bulges are what walls do before they fall, and rebuilding two metres now is a fraction of rebuilding twenty after a wet winter.

What should you ask a stonemason?

• Whether they build dry or with a hidden mortar core, and why they recommend that here.
• Where the stone is coming from, and whether it matches what is already on the plot.
• How they handle drainage behind a retaining wall.
• Whether the height needs any permission, which on a boundary or a terrace it sometimes does.
