When is the best time to lay a lawn in Mallorca?

Autumn is the better window, roughly October to early December, when the ground is warm and the rain is returning. Spring works if you can commit to watering it through its first summer. Laying turf in June is possible and expensive, because everything depends on irrigation from day one.

Autumn or spring

A lawn laid in November roots through the mild months and meets its first July with a working root system. The same lawn laid in April has a few weeks of growth before the heat arrives, and any interruption to watering shows immediately. Autumn also uses far less water in the establishment period, which matters where restrictions apply.

Turf or seed

Turf establishes faster and holds a slope better, which suits most Mallorcan plots. Seed is cheaper per square metre and works if you have time and can keep the surface damp through germination, which in practice means autumn only. A new natural lawn on a medium garden costs about €2,600 to €3,800 laid.

What the ground needs first

Levelling, and enough soil to hold water. Thin, stony ground drains too fast for grass, so preparation usually means importing topsoil and working it in, which is a real part of the cost rather than an optional extra. Irrigation goes in at the same time, because a lawn cannot be watered by drip and needs its own arrangement.

The question worth asking first

Whether the lawn is going to be watered legally in three summers. Municipal restrictions target lawn irrigation first, and a new lawn laid the year before a drought decree becomes an expensive brown rectangle.
