Terraced orange groves filling the Sóller valley, ringed by the grey limestone of the Serra de Tramuntana

Landscaping in Sóller and Port de Sóller

The Sóller valley is a bowl of citrus groves ringed by mountains, with a harbour at the open end, and it grows things nowhere else on the island can. Say whether you are in the valley or down at the port and we pass the request on.

The best ground on the island, and the steepest

Deep alluvial soil in the valley bottom, water from the mountains, shelter on every side and frost that is rare rather than routine. That combination is why the orange and lemon groves are here, and it means a garden in Sóller can support planting that would be unrealistic twenty kilometres away.

What it costs is slope and access. Above the valley floor everything is terraced, the lanes are narrow, and getting material to a plot is often the largest single item in a quote.

The port is a different garden again. Open to the sea at the mouth of the valley, so salt and wind return, and the plots there need the tolerant species the valley can do without.

What gardens here usually need

  • Citrus care, including iron chlorosis on alkaline ground
  • Terrace and marge repair on the valley sides
  • Irrigation from the traditional channel system where it survives
  • Storm water routed off steep ground
  • Salt tolerant planting down at the port
  • Access planning on narrow lanes and tracks
  • Shade tolerant planting under mature groves
  • Permissions checked in the protected landscape

Edible garden and orchard

Citrus and fruit are what this valley does.

Dry stone and retaining walls

The terracing that holds the valley sides.

Irrigation repair

Old channel and pipework systems.

Why do my citrus leaves turn yellow?

Usually iron chlorosis caused by alkaline soil rather than a lack of feeding. It is treatable, and worth diagnosing before adding fertiliser.

Is frost a risk in the valley?

Less than in the interior, thanks to the shelter, though cold air does settle on the valley floor on clear nights.

Can machinery reach terraced plots?

Often not. Hand work and small machines are normal here, and it shows in the price.
