What does a garden renovation cost in Mallorca?

Renovation is not quoted as a single figure, because no two tired gardens are tired in the same way. It is assembled from the same lines as a new garden. On a medium Mallorca plot at a standard finish, replanting with new irrigation runs €7,800 to €11,200, rebuilding terraces and stonework €11,500 to €16,500, and a plan to work from €1,000 to €1,400. Most renovations use two of those lines rather than all of them.

What does a renovation actually include?

Work back from what the garden needs rather than from a single number. These are the lines a renovation is normally built from, at the ranges in the cost guide calculator, for a medium garden at a standard finish.

A premium specification on the planting line takes it to €10,500 to €15,100, and a bespoke one to €14,000 to €20,200. Those multipliers apply across the other lines as well.

What is worth keeping?

Mature trees almost always. An olive, a carob or a large pine represents decades of growth and enough shade to change how the whole garden works, and replacing that costs far more than designing around it. Sound dry stone walls are usually worth repointing rather than rebuilding. Old irrigation is usually worth removing, because a patched system with no plan behind it fails at the worst moment and takes new planting with it.

Cracked concrete edging, failing paving laid over roots and anything that has already been repaired twice are cheaper to take away than to disguise.

Why do two renovation quotes differ so much?

• One includes clearance and disposal and the other assumes you will deal with it.
• One assumes the existing irrigation is reused and the other prices a new system.
• One is pricing to keep the mature planting and the other has allowed for taking it out.
• One has seen the access and the other has not.

The fix is to write the scope down before asking. Once several companies price the same list, the numbers become comparable, which is the whole point of having a plan first.

Is renovation cheaper than starting again?

Usually, though not by as much as people expect. If the hard landscaping is sound and the trees stay, renovation is clearly cheaper. Once the surfaces, the levels and the irrigation all have to go, the saving reduces to the planting you keep, and at that point it is worth asking for both to be priced.
