Water Features in Mallorca

Water in a Mediterranean garden is an old idea here, and a small one usually does more than a large one. Describe what you have in mind and we pass it to companies on Mallorca that build and maintain them.

Sound, reflection, or wildlife

Deciding which of those you want settles most of the design. A wall spout in a courtyard is about sound, and it can run on a few litres recirculating. A still reflecting pool is about surface and light, so it wants shelter from wind and no splash at all. A planted pond is about life in the garden, which means depth, shade and a filtration approach that tolerates leaves.

Water loss is the practical issue on this island. An exposed feature in July evaporates faster than people expect, and a feature that has to be topped up by hand while the owners are away becomes an empty basin with a stained rim.

Traditional Mallorcan water elements, the safareig cistern and the stone irrigation channel, are worth looking at before anything is designed from scratch. Many properties already have one that only needs repair to work again.

What a water feature request usually covers

  • Excavation, structure and waterproofing
  • Pumps, pipework and recirculation
  • Filtration and water treatment
  • Automatic top up from the supply
  • Restoration of an existing cistern or channel
  • Planting in and around the water
  • Underwater and surround lighting
  • Electrical supply and safe isolation
  • A maintenance routine for the season

How your request reaches a company

Mallorca Landscapers is a comparison service. A request for a water feature goes to the landscaping companies on our list; they quote the work and carry it out, and any agreement is between you and the company you pick.

  1. 01

    Describe the job

Tell us the property, roughly what you want and where it is. Photographs and a rough plan help, though neither is required.

  2. 02

    We match it

The request goes to companies that work in your area and take on this kind of job at this size.

  3. 03

    They quote you

Each company contacts you directly with its own price, timing and approach. We do not set any of it.

  4. 04

    You compare and choose

Put the quotes side by side and take the one you want, or none of them. Using the site costs you nothing.

Does a water feature use much water?

A recirculating one uses what it loses to evaporation and splash, which in an exposed spot in summer is more than people expect. Shade and shelter cut it substantially.

Will it attract mosquitoes?

Moving water and a properly filtered pond generally do not. Still shallow water with no circulation does, which is one reason a feature should never be left half empty.

Can an old cistern be brought back into use?

Often yes, and it is worth asking about before building something new. Restoring a safareig usually costs less than an equivalent new structure and it suits the property better.
