Lawns and Ground Cover in Mallorca

A lawn on Mallorca is a decision about water before it is a decision about grass. Tell us how the space will be used and we pass the request to companies that lay lawns and their alternatives here.

When a lawn is worth its water

Grass that children play on is worth its water. Grass that exists to be looked at from a terrace usually is not, and it is the first thing to suffer when a municipality tightens restrictions in a dry summer.

The species matters more than most people expect. Warm season grasses such as bermuda and zoysia go brown in winter but survive July on a fraction of what a cool season mix demands, while a ryegrass lawn kept green through August is close to the highest water use in any Mallorcan garden.

Between the two extremes sit the alternatives. Dichondra, thyme and gravel with planting through it all give a soft looking surface that asks for very little once established, and a defined lawn area surrounded by them is often the compromise that actually works. That is usually the shape of a family garden here, and it is the single biggest decision in a low maintenance garden as well.

What a lawn request usually covers

  • Ground preparation, levelling and drainage
  • Topsoil and soil improvement
  • Turf, seed or plug planting
  • Warm season species where water is limited
  • Ground cover planting instead of grass
  • Artificial grass where nothing else is realistic
  • Irrigation sized for the area
  • Edging to keep the shape
  • A first season care programme

How your request reaches a company

Mallorca Landscapers is a comparison service. A request for a lawn or ground cover goes to the landscaping companies on our list; they quote the work and carry it out, and any agreement is between you and the company you pick.

  3. 03

    They quote you

Each company contacts you directly with its own price, timing and approach. We do not set any of it.

Can I have a green lawn all year on Mallorca?

You can, but it means a cool season grass and a lot of water through summer, which is exactly what gets restricted first. Many owners take the winter dormancy of a warm season grass instead.

Is artificial grass a sensible answer here?

For small shaded courtyards and roof terraces it often is. In full sun it gets genuinely hot underfoot, so it suits some plots and not others.

When should a lawn be laid?

Autumn suits most species here, and spring works for warm season grasses. Laying in high summer means watering heavily from day one.
