Inland conditions with a coastal postcode

The hills between the village and the sea take out most of the salt, so the plant list here is closer to the interior than to the bays below. Cypress, citrus and softer leaved shrubs are realistic, and shelter is less of a design driver than it is on the front line.

The ground is deeper than on the rocky coast, with almond and carob terraces on the slopes and heavier soil in the valley bottom. That makes real planting beds possible rather than built ones.

What the valley shares with the rest of the municipality is the rhythm of use. Many houses are occupied part of the year, so the garden has to hold its shape between visits.

What gardens in Calvià usually need

  • Terrace and dry stone repair on the slopes
  • Almond and carob grove management
  • Planting in deeper valley soil rather than built beds
  • Irrigation fed from wells on rural parcels
  • Maintenance scheduled around part year occupancy
  • Clearance and firebreaks on land outside the village
  • Shade over west facing terraces
  • Drainage where hillside water crosses a plot

Is Calvià village the same as Calvià the resort area?

No. The municipality covers the coast from Illetes to Santa Ponsa, but the village itself is inland and grows very differently.

Does the soil hold water here?

In the valley bottom more than on the slopes, and heavier ground can mean winter waterlogging as well as summer reserve.

Do I need permission for rural work?

For anything structural on rústico land, usually. The company quoting should tell you what applies.
