Townhouse and Courtyard Gardens in Mallorca

A village or city house usually has a small enclosed space and a roof, and both of them are harder to garden than an open plot. Describe what you have and we pass the request to companies that work in tight spaces.

Small does not mean simple

A courtyard is a set of extremes stacked on top of each other. Deep shade against a north wall, reflected glare off a white one, no soil depth at all in places, and access that runs through the living room with a wheelbarrow that does not fit.

Those constraints are also why courtyards can be so good. A shaded patio with a few large pots, a climber on a wall and water somewhere out of sight is one of the pleasantest spaces on this island, and it needs very little maintenance once it is right.

The two practical questions are access and drainage. Everything comes in and goes out by hand, and any hard surface in an enclosed space has to send water somewhere other than the house wall.

What townhouse owners most often ask for

  • Planting for deep shade and for reflected heat
  • Large containers instead of open ground
  • Climbers and green walls where floor space is short
  • Repaving a patio with the right fall
  • Roof terrace planting and shelter
  • Automatic irrigation for pots
  • Lighting for a space used mostly at night
  • Screening from overlooking neighbours
  • Work planned around access through the house

How your request reaches a company

Mallorca Landscapers is a comparison service. A request for a courtyard or terrace goes to the landscaping companies on our list; they quote the work and carry it out, and any agreement is between you and the company you pick.

  1. 01

    Describe the job

Tell us the property, roughly what you want and where it is. Photographs and a rough plan help, though neither is required.

  2. 02

    We match it

The request goes to companies that work in your area and take on this kind of job at this size.

  3. 03

    They quote you

Each company contacts you directly with its own price, timing and approach. We do not set any of it.

  4. 04

    You compare and choose

Put the quotes side by side and take the one you want, or none of them. Using the site costs you nothing.

Is a small courtyard worth a designer?

Often more than a large garden is. With little space there is no room for a wrong decision, and the cost of getting the layout right is small next to repaving twice.

What grows in permanent shade?

More than people expect. Ferns, aspidistra, fatsia and clivia all cope, and a pale wall behind them does a lot of work.

Can work be done without access through the house?

Sometimes, by crane or through a shared entrance, and sometimes not. Say what the access is in your request, because it changes the price.
