What does garden design cost in Mallorca?

A garden design plan for a medium Mallorca garden, somewhere between 200 and 500 m², typically runs €1,000 to €1,400. A small courtyard sits nearer €600 to €800, and a plot over 1,000 m² closer to €2,500 to €3,500. That is the drawing and the planting scheme. Building the garden is quoted separately, and it is where most of the budget goes.

What does the design fee actually buy?

A design fee buys a plan you can build from and hand to more than one company. In practice that means a measured survey of the plot, a layout showing where things go, a planting scheme naming species and quantities, and enough detail on levels, paving and irrigation for a builder to price the work without guessing.

On this island the survey matters more than it does on the mainland. Two gardens of identical size can differ by a factor of several once you account for a lorry that cannot reach the plot, a slope that needs retaining before anything is planted, and a water supply that decides what can live there at all.

How much does design cost by garden size?

Design is usually priced against the area being planned rather than by the hour, so size is the first lever. These are the ranges we see quoted on Mallorca for a plan at a standard level of detail.

A more detailed brief pushes the fee up. Mature specimen trees, custom stonework and lighting laid out fixture by fixture all mean more drawing, and the same garden planned to that level can cost close to twice the standard figure. Why is the build priced separately?

Because they are different jobs, often done by different people. The plan is drawn once. The build is materials, machinery and labour, and it moves with the site. For the medium garden above, planting and an irrigation system come in at €7,800 to €11,200, terracing and dry stone walling at €11,500 to €16,500, and a lighting scheme at €2,000 to €2,800.

Keeping the two apart is also what makes comparison possible. Once a plan exists, several companies can quote the same scope, and the differences between them stop being a matter of interpretation.

What pushes a design fee up?

• A terraced plot needs levels, retaining and drainage resolved on paper before anyone discusses planting.
• If a machine cannot reach the site, everything arrives by wheelbarrow and the plan has to account for it.
• Mains, well or cistern changes what can be planted and how the irrigation is zoned.
• A planting list is one level of detail. A lighting layout, paving details and a phased build programme are another.

Does a small garden need a designer at all?

Not always. A courtyard with a few pots, a strip of gravel and one tree is within reach of a good gardener working from a conversation. A plan starts earning its fee when there are levels to resolve, an irrigation system to zone, or a budget large enough that a mistake is expensive to undo.
