Poolside Garden

The most used part of most Mallorcan gardens, and the one with the strictest rules. Everything here is chosen for how it behaves rather than for how it looks in a photograph.

A sheltered seating area under a rose-covered pergola, with built-in benches around a stone fire pit at dusk

Low litter, no spikes, cool underfoot

Those three conditions eliminate most of the obvious choices. Bougainvillea drops constantly. Agave and yucca are hazardous beside bare feet and wet tile. Pines shed needles that block a skimmer within days.

What is left is better than it sounds. Clipped westringia and myrtle, dwarf olive, oleander, dietes and lomandra all hold their shape, tolerate splash and drop very little.

The surface is the other half of the decision. Pale, textured, and cool enough to walk on barefoot in the afternoon, with the fall taking splash water away from the house rather than towards it.

Typical ingredients

  • Pale slip resistant coping and surround
  • Low litter evergreen planting in defined blocks
  • Screening on the overlooked side only
  • Shade over part of the terrace
  • Nothing spiky within reach of a bare foot
  • Lighting at step and coping level
  • Access kept open to pumps and filtration
  • Drainage away from both the pool and the house

Pool surround planting

Species by species, what behaves and what does not.

Pergolas and shade

Making the terrace usable in the middle of the day.

Can I plant right up to the edge?

Up to the coping, with the right species and a barrier against root spread. What matters is keeping roots away from the shell and pipework.

What about palms by the pool?

They look right and they shed heavily, and on Mallorca they also bring the red palm weevil question. Many owners place them away from the water rather than beside it.
