Garden lighting that works in a Mallorca garden

A garden lighting scheme on Mallorca costs about €2,000 to €2,800 for a medium garden, or €1,800 to €2,600 when it rides on other work while the ground is already open. The design principle is simple: light a few things properly and leave the rest dark. A garden lit evenly all over looks like a car park.

What is worth lighting?

The things that have shape. An olive with a good trunk, a section of dry stone wall, a set of steps, the underside of a pergola. Those give you a garden with depth after dark. Lighting the middle of a lawn or a flat expanse of gravel gives you brightness and nothing else.

Steps and level changes are the exception where function comes first. Anywhere someone might misjudge a drop in the dark gets light regardless of how it looks.

What does a scheme cost?

Most of the cost is trenching, cable and the electrician rather than the fittings themselves. That is why adding lighting during a build costs less than retro-fitting it into a finished garden, where every run has to avoid roots and paving that are already there.

Which fittings survive here?

Near the sea, marine-grade stainless or solid brass. Anything else corrodes, and a fitting that pits and streaks after two winters looks worse than no lighting at all. Inland the requirements relax, but the sun does not: cheap plastic lenses yellow and crack under this UV within a few seasons.

Buried uplighters need drainage under them. A sealed pot that fills with water in October kills the fitting and, if it is on the same circuit as everything else, takes the scheme down with it.

How much light is too much?

Warm colour temperature, low output, and fewer fittings than you think. Two or three watts on a tree is usually plenty in a dark garden, and the temptation to go brighter is what turns a scheme flat. Dimming or splitting the circuit into zones lets you run one setting for dinner outside and another for finding the gate.

Neighbouring properties and wildlife are worth a thought too. Light spilling over a boundary is a reliable way to fall out with people, and permanent bright light through the night changes the behaviour of everything living in the garden.

What about solar?

Solar path markers are fine for what they are, which is a low-level indication of where the path goes. They will not uplight a tree, they fade through winter, and their batteries have a short life here. For anything you actually want to look at, wired low-voltage is the option that still works in year five.
